We have known for years that cannabis is an effective treatment for epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and more. But, it has been difficult to understand the mechanism of action of CBD.
That is because there is a big difference between THC and CBD. THC is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. And, it is responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis. THC acts on the same receptor in the brain that alcohol and many prescription drugs do. It causes those receptors to “light up” and produce the same effects.
THC produces feelings of euphoria, relaxation, and pleasure. But, it also produces a lot of negative side effects. CBD does not produce those psychoactive effects. Instead, it activates a different type of receptor. And, that causes it to produce effects that are very different.
CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. That means that it does not activate the same type of receptor in the brain that THC does. Instead, it activates a different type of cannabinoid receptor. And, it produces a wide variety of different effects. It has been shown to decrease pain, increase appetite, improve cognition, and reduce anxiety.
When CBD is consumed in high doses, it can also produce psychedelic effects. But, that is different than the effects of THC. THC can cause short-term memory loss, tachycardia, and paranoia. It can also cause long-term damage to the lungs and liver. And, it can cause other serious health problems.
CBD does not cause these same negative side effects. In fact, it has been shown to have very few side effects when used in the correct doses. Cannabis does not produce the same effects on every person. This is because our genetics and physiology play a large role in the effects that cannabis can produce.
